RECENT ACQUISITION • “Ku-Kua” Bronze Statue

SUBJECT: This fine-art serigraph was created for Fall Modernism Week 2024 in Palm Springs. It was inspired by Shag’s “Ku-Kua” (Hawaiian Demi-God) Cold Cast Bronze Sculpture, which features an image of “Ku-Kua” in the foreground and features homages to famous artists throughout the fine-art limited edition serigraph.

The „Ku-Kua” made of cold cast bronze with a polyresin base, 56cm tall, and weighs 10kg, only 55 bronze statues were casted.

Here are some thoughts from SHAG about his “Ku-Kua” sculpture: “This is my first cold cast bronze sculpture, “Ku-Kua.” In this piece, I tried combining elements of traditional Polynesian carving with the figural abstraction of early 20th-century sculptors such as Henry Moore and Jacques Lipchitz. It has been in the works since before the pandemic and I am thrilled it’s finally here.” Unfortunately, it is only sold in the USA. https://shagstore.com/products/ku-kua-cold-cast-bronze-sculpture

THE PROCESS OF CREATION: SHAG’s limited editions introduced in Budapest are produced using the silk-screen (serigraph) printing method. Serigraphy for additional color depth, saturation, density, and texture are a perfect match to SHAG’s painting style.

He is collaborating with Kolibri Art Studio atelier in Los Angeles for decades for unparalleled quality at enormous sizes for always a small, limited edition of 200 serigraphs only. Anywhere from 10 to 25 colors (some colors are printed twice for optimum quality) with hand color-separation, required 2 months to print since it is very labor-intensive to complete these unique editions. His media choice is always the US-made, 100% rag 2 or 4-ply “Rising Museum Board” brand, acid-free, thick archival paper, only with 5cm margins left outside the live area.

For the finish, SHAG requires a very expensive UV matte clear coat application, specifically designed for silk-screen printing, to preserve the extra longevity of the serigraph print.
